Meet our Coeditors
D. Kirk Hamilton, FAIA, FACHA is coeditor of the Health Environments Research & Design Journal (HERD) Mr. Hamilton is Fellow and Associate Director of the Center for Health Systems & Design as well as an Associate Professor of Architecture at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, where his research area is the relationship of evidence-based design of health facilities and measurable organizational performance. He is also a Founding Principal Emeritus, WHR Architects, Houston and Dallas, TX. WHR is an internationally recognized firm that specializes in healthcare architecture.
A board certified healthcare architect with 30 years experience in hospital design, he was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows for his advocacy for excellence in architecture for health, innovations in design, for research, and his visions for the hospital of the future. His experience includes professional training in facilitation, graphic recording, conflict resolution and small group dynamics through the American Leadership Forum. Mr. Hamilton holds MS in Organization Development from Pepperdine University and a B.Arch from the University of Texas.
Mr. Hamilton is a past president of the AIA's Academy of Architecture for Health, as well as past president and a founding regent of the American College of Healthcare Architects. He serves on the board of the Center for Health Design. He was the 2003 chair of the Society for Critical Care Medicine's design committee, and serves on the faculty of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's collaboratives on improving flow in the acute care setting and transforming care at the bedside.
Jaynelle F. Stichler, DNSc, RN, FACHE, FAAN is coeditor of the Health Environments Research & Design Journal (HERD) and a Professor of Nursing at San Diego State University, School of Nursing, College of Health & Human Services. Dr. Stichler is the Concentration Chair for the Nursing Leadership in Health Systems and teaches graduate classes in Nursing and Health Services Administration.
Dr. Stichler was previously a Principal and Senior Consultant for an architectural firm specializing in healthcare design and was the Director of Healthcare Planning. In this role, she participated in the strategic planning, operational process improvement, and facility design of over 150 hospitals in the US and abroad. Dr. Stichler has over 25 years of experience as a healthcare executive and was the Vice-President for the Women’s Service-line for Sharp HealthCare System, the Executive Director for Women’s Services at Sharp Memorial Hospital, and the founder of the Sharp Mary Birch Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Stichler has authored numerous articles in peer reviewed journals and books, and is a frequent presenter at national conferences. She authors a regularly appearing column entitled Health Facility Design for the Journal of Nursing Administration (JONA) and is on the editorial boards for Journal of Nursing in Women’s Health and Nurse Leader.
Dr. Stichler holds a BS and an MS in Nursing from the University of Arizona and a Doctorate of Nursing Science from the University of San Diego. She also has a Certificate in Executive Leadership from the Peter Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate School. Dr. Stichler is an active member of the Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honor Society, a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, and a member of the Western Institute of Nursing Research, Nursing Administration Research Council, American Nurses Association, American Organization of Nurse Executives, and Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing.
